Our stove releases smoke into the house when we open the stove door, it also has a black goo that runs down the chimney.

First you need your chimney swept, and inspected. Next you need to make sure that you are burning seasoned firewood, if you are buring green wood (wood that is still wet) it is forming creosote in your chimney. Also do not burn pine or cedar, the tar from that wood coats your chimney. Until you have it swept, do not burn a fire in there cause it could cause a fire.
