Mary J asked:

I know there is a wood pellet basket to use in wood stoves, but it doesn’t fit in my stove. Also the cast iron victorian fire baskets are nice but pricey.
Can I just make a pile in the bottom of the wood stove or would the amount of heat produced melt the metal?

You have not given enought info, most wood burning stoves should be able to burn pellets, but not all.

      Sorry

If you already have a good fire going you can put some in. they will not burn any hotter than regular wood, but if you put too many in they might cover the fire up and then just smolder and not give out heat very quickly.
