Provided the wood stove is lower than my fireplace, can I simply run stovepipe from the wood stove to the throat of my fireplace? Seems easier than installing an insert.

I know that fireplaces can actually cause heat loss in the house in very cold weather. While fireplaces are going out, every ember, heat is drawn from the house up the chimney, however, I believe that wood stoves are better heat producers and with the doors closed it would not need to go out. My question is- Is it effective for heat production to burn wood stoves during very cold weather or would it be better to let the furnace run like crazy?
