Can I simply run the stovepipe from a wood stove into my fireplace chimney?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
I have a small fireplace in my 15 year old home. I want to add a small wood stove to the middle of my living room.
Provided the wood stove is lower than my fireplace, can I simply run stovepipe from the wood stove to the throat of my fireplace? Seems easier than installing an insert.

how far should smoke travel horizontally through pipes in a wood stove?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
I want to put a wood stove on one side of my garage and run the pipes to the other side (about 25 feet) to go out the wall into the chimney. Is 25 feet too long of a horizontal line for the wood smoke to travel before reaching the chimney?

Do I need to have a chimney sweep inspect chimney before installing a wood stove?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
I am purchasing a wood stove and installing myself. The chimney hasn’t been used in quite a long time. Is it necessary to have it inspected and/or swept before operating the wood stove? If so how much would a chimney sweep charge me in NJ?
Thanks.

can a traditional indoor cast iron wood stove with a glass window be used for an outdoor wood fired sauna?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
I have a Jotul 8 wood stove and am upgrading to a newer stove. Can I use the older one as the heat source for an outdoor wood fired sauna?
If so, can anyone direct me to a good source for plans for building the outdoor sauna? Thanks.

Is a wood stove an effective way to lower energy bills?

My husband and I have a free and unlimited source of firewood, but we don’t have a fireplace. Wood stoves tend to be expensive, and I just wondered if anyone knew if it would be worth it to get one in the long run? What kind do you have and how much do you save monthly using it?

Wood stove-what clearance is needed from a wall with cement board and ceramic tiles on it (in Canada)? Thx?

I need side and rear clearance for a 15 year old wood stove. The 2×4 walls are covered with cement board and ceramic tiles. Behind that is a foundation wall.

How efficient is the average wood stove?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
There is a fireplace in my house that in the past we’ve used as a supplement to an oil furnace. This year, we are having a wood stove put in and hope to solely use this for heat. I am just curious, how efficient is a wood stove? I found through some Google searches that a fireplace has an average efficiency of 15%. Just curious and would appreciate any knowledge on the subject.

My husband and I are looking for a wood stove small enough to fit in our 35 foot travel trailer with tipouts?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
It seems that the least expensive, and most space saving thing to do would be installing a small potbelly wood stove. If it was surrounded by tile on the walls and of course floor surrounding it, would the pot belly stove be a safe option, or would it be more safe to get a regular small wood stove?
Also, would a small pot belly stove be able to heat the whole trailer?

Is it effective to burn wood stoves during very cold weather?
Filed Under wood stoves | Comments Off
It has turned very cold (in the negatives without windchill) and we are wondering whether to light the wood stove as we normally do. I know that fireplaces can actually cause heat loss in the house in very cold weather. While fireplaces are going out, every ember, heat is drawn from the house up the chimney, however, I believe that wood stoves are better heat producers and with the doors closed it would not need to go out. My question is- Is it effective for heat production to burn wood stoves during very cold weather or would it be better to let the furnace run like crazy?
