Can you burn black walnuts in a fireplace or wood stove (not the wood, but the walnuts themselves)?

Fred asked:

There are tons of them around. They burn well in a charcoal bbq. I wonder if they can be used in a high efficiency wood stove? I’ve seen stoves which burn corn, so that got me wondering.

How to find a wood stove model/maker?

Silly Goose asked:

I have recently inherited a wood stove. I am looking to find the model number or maker of the stove. I have searched all over front back, top and bottom for any clues. All I can find are numbers on the inside of the door, they are different and they are 778020 and 778019. Would anyone be able to help me figure out atleast how to find who the maker of the stove is?

Darren Clasby asked:

Wood Burning Stoves

In this day and age we are all about cleaning up our environment and keeping the air that we breathe safe for not only us, but for future generations as well. We have gone to so many lengths to create cleaner air for the world. We now have inventions such as electric cars, hydrogen cars, and alternative energies to help reduce pollution. When you first think about having a wood burning stove, you may not think that it would be a very efficient help to the earth or your country, but you might just be surprised to know that wood burning stoves are a good alternative when you want to go green.

When you are looking at buying yourself a wood burning stove you want to consider the installation and what it is going to require to use the stove properly. If you do not install the stove properly, then the air within your home may become smoky and dangerous. You should always purchase a carbon monoxide detector if you use wood heat, so that any smoke will be instantly detected.

If you buy an EPA certified wood stove and you have it properly installed you will in turn reap many benefits. Your wood will burn more efficiently as well as safely, and there will be much less smoke released throughout your home and the environment.

When looking into buying your wood burning stove you want to make sure that you have the proper measurements from your home, proper height and the right location for your stove. You should avoid installing the stove yourself and look into hiring a professional if you have any doubts. There are many professionals who can help you install your wood burning stove for a very minimal fee, and you will be guaranteed that it is done correctly.

If you do decide to install the stove yourself without the help of a professional the errors that you come across may not be very visible to you, and you may not even know you have made an error at all. One of the biggest problems people run into when they install their wood burning stove is house fires due to the fact that the stove was not properly installed.

When properly installed, a wood burning stove can burn wood more efficiently and can even be used to cook part of your family’s meals. Haven’t you ever imagined having a home cooked meal on the holidays out of a real wood burning stove? Wood burning stoves may not be as harmful to the environment as you think, and if that is the one aspect that is keeping you away from buying your stove, just make sure that you have your stove installed and you should have no troubles, just a warm home and tasty food!

B Wilson asked:

CIENT

Wood pellet stoves are a clean burning and efficient source of heat energy. Many wood pellet stoves on the market have been rated to have burning efficiencies higher that 85% and have no issues meeting stringent local and federal air quality standards. Compared to wood stoves that have substantial soot and ash buildup after one use, pellet stoves can run for weeks at a time and still not produce as much ash as one days use with a wood stove.

ECO-FRIENDLY

The wood pellets that fuel these stoves are made from recycled sawdust that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills or incinerated in waste burners typically found at sawmills. Wood is also a natural renewable resource and by selecting wood pellets as a fuel source you are helping to recycle forestry related waste byproducts.

CONSISTENT HEAT SOURCE

Pellet stoves deliver the wood pellet fuel into the stoves combustible chamber on a regular and consistent basis. What this means is that you have a very steady and consistent source of heat for up to 72 hours before you have to refill the hopper with more wood pellets. No more feeding a wood stove chopped wood every couple of hours and facing hot and cold heating cycles as the wood burns strong then dies out.

HEATING CONVENIENCE

Fill up the hopper, start and go. That’s it! No more messing around with kindling or chopped wood, stoking, and refilling every couple of hours. You can even run pellet stoves connected to a thermostat to regulate the temperature. Pellet stoves offer true heating convenience without the hassles associated with traditional wood burning stoves.

COST EFFECTIVE

Pellet stoves are the most efficient solid fuel source on the planet, and because the pellets are made from a wood waste product the cost is very inexpensive to run a pellet stove compared to other heating sources. The rising cost of other energy sources like electricity, oil and natural gas have also added to the gaining popularity of pellet stoves.

EASY TO CLEAN

Pellet stoves are simple to clean. Most have simple lift out ash pans that need to be dumped every couple of weeks, depending upon your usage patterns. Furthermore, there is no wood pile mess, bark scraps, or having to sweeping out piles and piles of ash.

A series of questions about heating: wood stoves, pellet, furnace ect? Kansas City?

dt asked:

Would it be okay if I used a wood stove in Kansas City, MO.? Do people use them here?

What is better a pellet stove or a wood stove?

What have been done to modern wood stoves that make them better? What is a catalytic? I am asking this to know what to look for because I am thinking about buying used and want to know if I can modify an old one myself. Is there a big difference between old and new?

Are masonry stoves and oil stoves or whatever they’re called any good?

If I run a vent pipe out my basement windows does it have to reach above my roof?

Is it important to have a firebrick lining in a wood stove and why? What is the best material to have your stove made out of iron? Is it better for it to be thick? And are they hot to the touch?

Lastly, as for whole house furnaces that run into vents what is better and will save energy and how much gas or electric? And what is an electric heat pump as opposed to a normal furnace?

Why do wood stoves sometimes HUFFFFFFF?

Dump the liberals into Jupiter asked:

Once in a while, my wood stove (while burning wood or containing glowing wood charcoals) become congested with gas of some sort. I assume it is carbon dioxide. It is not itself combustable, but could be the product of some unusually rapid combustion. The high pressure of the gas forces its way out partly through the lower air vent and around the sides of the door to the burn chamber. The emerging smoke jets out of the stove and forms a wood-ashes smelly cloud in the house that I have to open both doors to be rid of.

It’s either something in the wood that decides to act poofy like gunpowder does when you burn a pile of it in the open air, or else something that the wood partially burned into suddenly completed its being burned and produced a lot of gas. What’s going on?
I live in the Allegheny mountains in West Virginia.
Nope. Wasn’t a downdraft. The overpressure was enough to bow out a steel box, and no downdraft is going to do that. There was some sort of quick combustion, either in the burn chamber or in the stove pipe (or both). A lot of something decided to burn at once.

My guess is that previous use of the wood stove caused creosote or small grains of charred wood to accumulate in the stove or pipe. When the conditions were right, the stuff combusted en masse.

Best place to get the most information on wood stoves?

dude0116 asked:

I am planning on installing a wood or wood pellet stove in the spring of 2009. I want to research as much as passable before I go shopping for my stove. My house is not to to big but I want the stove to heat the downstairs and as much as the up stairs as passable. What is better a wood stove or pellet stove I really don’t want to use coal but is that more cost efficient than wood or wood pellets? How much of a factor does the location of the stove play a role in proper distribution of heat How can I make the are “kid friendly” so my children do not get hurt. Any advice website personal stories would be helpful. Thank you
