And with the addition of a few simple accessories, you’ll be able to get even more out of your wood stove than you imagined. To learn about some of the most popular wood stove accessories and their benefits, read on.

Wood Stove Accessories

Circulating Fans

These attractive and practical accessories help transfer the warm air from the stove throughout the room. Two different types include doorway fans that move heat into other rooms, and fans built to fit into existing ducts so they can better disperse heat throughout the home.

Air Supply Ventilators

Modern homes are built to be air-tight. This can prevent a wood stove from drawing enough air to burn efficiently, which can also create excessive smoking. The problem can be resolved with air supply ventilators installed through an outside wall. No power source is necessary since the ventilators use the home’s negative air pressure inside to run. The improved draft means more efficient burning.

Draft Inducers

Electrically powered Draft Inducers help to increase the air flow up a chimney, which increases the negative pressure (draft) in the stove to prevent smoke leakage.

Wood Stove Kettles

Feeling parched? Wood stoves not only warm, but also dry out the air in your home. Wood stove kettles help humidify the room’s air and serve as an attractive decorative element.  Simply fill the kettle with water and place it on the stove. (Tip: porcelain-coated kettles won’t rust on the inside.)

Wood Stove Steamers

Use steamers to humidify the air, or add potpourri to the water to create a pleasant fragrance.

Trivets

These durable cast-iron hot plates are decorative as well as practical. Use trivets to protect your stove top from rust spots that can be cause by kettles or steamers. Trivets also prevent kettles or cooking pots from getting too hot.

Wood Stove Thermometer

Ensure your fireplace is burning at peak efficiency by using a thermometer. It will help cut down on the wood expense, while reducing maintenance and improving safety.  The thermometers usually attaches to the stovepipe with a magnet or by drilling a small hole in the stove pipe.

Hearth Pad

Use a hearth pad if your wood stove is not on a fire-proof floor to provide the protective layer of insulation necessary to prevent damage.

Stove Pipe Shams

Turn your ordinary stove pipe into a stylish accent piece. Stove pipe shams help dress up plain black stove pipes by adding a dash of color.  Installation is easy and there’s no need to disconnect or remove the pipe.

High-Temperature Paints

These specially designed paints are made to withstand high temperatures that can cause ordinary paint to peel and blister. A variety of high-temperature paints are available for touching up, renewing, and protecting the finish on steel or cast-iron wood stoves. You can also add shine and luster to your black wood stove with high-temperature polishes.

Gaskets

Use gaskets to Improve the efficiency of your wood stove and keep the stove glass cleaner longer. Gaskets normally last a long time. However, if your stoves gaskets are worn out, replacement kits are available to help restore your stove to peak efficiency.

Craig Laningham asked:

The trend of having a fireplace in the living space is ‘in’ again. These are a perfect combination of beauty, style and of course coziness. But it is true that fireplaces are inefficient as they actually make the rest of the house colder. If you are someone who is more concerned about energy efficiency and electricity bills, you might have to reject the idea of building a fireplace in the house.

Because of lower temperature and chilling nights, Wood stoves Atlanta have emerged as better alternatives to fireplaces. Don’t think badly about the older version of wood stoves as these have actually evolved a lot in terms of efficiency and looks. These stoves are cleaner and have many benefits like:

• They require cheap and renewable local fuel.

• They don’t need petroleum for burning purpose.

• Wood stoves produce less pollution than fireplaces.

A proper installation plays a crucial role in improving the efficiency of a wood stove. Everything from the heating requirements of the house to the natural flow of heat and air is considered while installing the wood stove. A careless installation will result in making your wood stove work as inefficiently as a fireplace.

So, here are some installation specifications you must follow to get the maximum advantage out of a wood stove:

It is always better to get professional help for installing the wood stove. In the beginning, you might not see any problem with the working of the stove, but if a problem arises, it can become the cause of a house fire.

Have a chimney for each wood stove. If you are installing a stove at the place where the fireplace was built, find out how old the chimney is before attaching the stove pipe. In case the chimney was built decades ago, there are chances that it may not be up to the present safety standards.

Consider the layout of the house and lifestyle of your family while placing a wood stove. As the stove will heat its direct surroundings, it will be better to install it in a space where all of you spend most of the time.

Know the minimum clearance requirements before placing the wood stove. The distance of the wood stove from the surrounding walls and floors will depend on the following factors:

• If the walls and floors are combustible?

• Certification of the stove and its manufacturing as per safety requirements.

• If you want to install heat shields on the combustible walls?

The size of the stove is directly proportional to the room size. If the stove is bigger than the room size ratio, it will overheat the surrounding. But a too small stove will not be fit for heating a comparatively larger room. So, you must consult a wood stove expert before purchasing and while installing the stove to get the maximum advantage.

Brian Jenkins asked:

Those looking into buying a stove to reduce their heating costs or add ambiance to their home may be confused about the difference between different types of stoves. Stoves come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and can be chosen to match just about any décor. A stove is also a great alternative to a fireplace and can act as a space heater.

Stand-alone stoves can use gas, wood, or pellets for fuel. At first, the wood and pellet choices may look very similar to a homeowner, but there are major differences between the two. Carefully consider each fuel type before choosing and installing a stove.

What is a Wood Stove?

A wood stove is a freestanding appliance that is used to contain a fire within the home. The stove is designed to allow enough air to keep the fire burning evenly and may have an igniter. They are very similar to traditional fireplaces, but there is no mantel or hearth.

What is a Pellet Stove?

A pellet stove is design to burn small pill-shaped fuel made from wood byproducts. These pellets look a lot like rabbit food. A pellet stove is heats evenly, but lets off little exhaust. They have become preferable for their environmentally friendly fuel and efficiency.

Differences in Design

These two kinds of stoves look the same on the outside, but each of them has been designed to handle their recommended fuel. A wood stove looks like a fireplace firebox from the outside, but on the inside it has special ventilation mechanisms that keep the fire burning well in the small space of the stove. A properly designed wood stove should be able to heat the room without making it uncomfortable.

Some of these stoves use the hot air inside to rotate a ventilation fan above the fire that draws in air. The extra oxygen helps the fire continue burning. Other stoves circulate air around the stove in order to pull fresh air inside. Wood burning stoves also require specific kinds of flues that can handle the build up of carbon and creosote.

Pellet stoves are much different than wood stoves on the inside. The biggest difference is the hopper full of extra fuel that sits above the flames. The pellets are gravity fed into the stove at a constant rate. Most have feeding mechanisms that ensure the right amount of fuel is added to the fire. Pellets stoves also have exhaust fans that remove heat from the stove and bring in air.

Individual Advantages

Pellet stoves have become very popular in recent years because they have many advantages over older stoves. Since pellets are made from sawdust and other filler material, they are more environmentally friendly than any other kind of burning fuel. Using them for heating disposes of materials that would otherwise be dumped with other waste. The pellets also burn cleanlier than other fuels. They do not give off creosote like wood does.

Pellets provide even heat that spreads from the stove. Wood stoves are known to heat the room they are in so well that home HVAC systems shut down, leaving other rooms cold. Since wood burns much less efficiently than pellets, it also has a much higher chance of throwing sparks and starting a fire.

Another advantage to pellet systems is that they are easier to place and install because they can use different kinds of flues and exhaust systems. The stove retailer should be able to advise a homeowner of the best system for their home. Some companies provide home installation services that take the guesswork out of making the system efficient.

Wood stoves are preferable to pellet stoves for those who have lots of wood on hand. Pellets can be hard to come by and usually only come in large quantities, but firewood is available just about anywhere.

Choosing a Stove

Though pellet stoves have skyrocketed in popularity recently, there is still reason for a homeowner to install a wood stove. Those who don’t have the space for a freestanding stove can purchase fireplace insets that utilize the same heating techniques.

Homeowners looking for a stove should ask themselves how much they would like to spend on a stove, what kind of fuel is most readily available in there area, and if the primary purpose of the stove will be heating or aesthetics. The purchase and installation of a new stove can cost a few thousand dollars, so the decision should not be made lightly.

Both varieties of stove will provide warmth during the winter and the kind of comfort that only a fire can provide.

David Fishman asked:

Checking the authenticity and usability of the wood stoves needs to be checked before making any purchase. Wood stoves were used in ancient America for many household and general purposes. A wood stove is a device, which is normally used in the kitchens for the heating of food, keeping it warm and making it palatable. A wood stove is often used for heating rooms or cooking food. Purchasing a free standing wood stove is a great way for anyone who doesn’t want the hassle of building in the stove, this makes it easier if you decide to remove. A pellet-stove is very efficient because the pellets that are used are made from scraps of wood and compressed together.

Many wood stove that insert into the fireplace have fans that can blow the warm air and not the smoke into the rooms, this is a great way of getting more heat into the house. The primary reason for installing a wood stove insert rather than a stand alone stove is to utilize an existing fireplace, however there are additional benefits. A stove insert which is installed into an existing brick or stone fireplace will certainly be more efficient than a stand alone unit located within the room. Using glass doors that covers the front of a fireplace is a great way of stopping the heat from escaping, this reduces the heat from escaping but does not stop it completely.

An outdoor wood burning furnace is most well known for its ability to heat on a low budget. This low-cost heating is often most beneficial to homeowners. Wood heat is a comfortable way of heating your home but it does take some safety knowledge and precautions to do so safely. Heat is something that every home needs; unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to afford.

Buying a certified stove completely reduces the chances of your chimney catching fire. Try to keep the chimney clean, over the years the chimney will accumulate creosote and this can cause a fire if not cleaned frequently. The chimney must be checked for an excess of soot deposited on its inside. The most convenient and preferable location for the installation of the chimney is the center of the house. Every pot belly stove has a chimney that is attached to let the smoke out.

The cost of heating with wood is relatively inexpensive. Many wood stoves come with a lot of accessories but you will need to purchase them because they are not given in the package when the stove is purchased. This adds a personal touch to the customers’ wood stove as they can use the leg piece of their choice. Wood stoves come with a nice feature that catches the ashes it is called the ash drawer. Check the manufacturers warranty on all stoves and make sure this is sufficient for your use, many manufactures have a limited warranty period. With its fine design and elegance, a contemporary wood stove is sure to add style and class to any room. Wood stoves were used in ancient America for many household and general purposes.

My wood stove is majorly smoking, and can’t get my boyfriend to pull the wood from the back to the front of the stove. When I emptied the ashes into a fire proof barrel I noticed a slat in the back that extended from one side to the other. I used a shovel to get the ashes out and noticed that the slat closed. I keep trying to tell him that, that is the flew. So he is on the phone with the woodstove people. Can anyone help me out. I’m getting smoked out and freezy breezy
