I heard that wood burning stoves and fireplaces are cleaner then regular natural gas operated heaters…why? and is that true?

Safety Tips for Wood Stoves (Details!)?

Pickle asked:
My grandfather refuses to not use a wood stove he has in the basement. We live together and I am uncomfortable with it. He spent money to buy alot of wood for it and it’s been installed correctly. But I can’t get over the fear of a fire getting loose. My grandfather is absent minded at times and forgets to close the door to the stove. I sleep in a room on the second floor and it only has one exit. The only window has an AC screwed/nailed into the window. I’d be stuck upstairs. Anyways, What are some safety tips to make me feel better about this? I can’t always check the stove before he goes to bed and he sometimes gets up in the middle of the night while I’m sleeping to add wood. I’m always worried that he’ll forget to close the door or something will go wrong. So other than a smoke alarm and Carbon monoxide alarm what can I do?
